In this weeks blog I will be talking about Ash Wednesday, Ash Wednesday was the first day of Lent. Where we got the ashes on our foreheads and we feel penance. We have had a normal week besides Wednesday. For Lent, I am giving up technology, Junk food, to fast from being lazy and fast from homework. Lent is a forty day period of fasting and repentance in preparation for Easter, the Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Although there are differences in practice of recognizing Lent, all major Christian denominations observe the season. The last day before Lent is called Mardi Gras, which today is associated mostly with partying, yet originally it had important spiritual significance. Lent has been observed since apostolic times as a period of reflection and penitence for those who would undergo baptism on Easter, and a time for all sinners to repent. Christians began observing Lent in the fourth century, during which they typically abstained from luxury foods like meat, dairy products and eggs. Today, Roman Catholics refrain from eating meat on Fridays during the Lenten season. Eastern Orthodox Christians, however, follow stricter fasting rules where no meat, eggs or dairy products are allowed. However, fish can be eaten on Palm Sunday, March 20.
